A familiar story: I'm looking for a huge sounding instrument, an instrument that's dead easy to play, an instrument that responds to everything that you ask it to do, be it in the orchestra or in that jazz cafe. Oh yes I am - but I don't want to pay 15 or 20 grand to get it. Oh dear! This seems to be a familiar story that we hear all too often at The Contrabass Shoppe, but one which we are constantly trying to rectify. How about this for a contender then: For the amazing price of UK£11,000 this really impressive-looking instrument - built in 2003 with the serious orchestral / jazz player firmly in mind - will completely fulfil all those high expectations. You don't believe me. Well come and try it out, for I promise you that this instrument's sound department is really quite exceptional. Where does all this sound come from? Well this biggish (If you've stopped growing at 1.68 meters this instrument probably isn't for you.) instrument boasts a well proportioned carved back, a simply massive table area and a good deep rib depth (23.4cm on bottom bouts). In addition all the thicknesses are correct and the neck angle is set perfectly so that this instrument seems to just give and give and give. If you are wondering - the sound is a full mature one and for all you jazzers there is a sustain that just goes on and on. Would like to listen to a sound clip? ... The instrument certainly is a stunner: Yes - you can say that again. This Rocca copy has the advantage of nicely raked upper shoulders and the quality of the maple used in its manufacture is truly exceptional. Just take a look at the near horizontal flaming in the back and ribs - for this quality of timber is normally reserved to make cellos. Just take a look at the quality of the spruce used to make the table - and marvel at the strong, straight even-medium grain. Fabulous stuff indeed. How come the instrument was made in 2003? Our supplier has assured us that the wood used to make these instruments has been naturally seasoned for at least five years. Just to be absolutely sure that there will be no further movement or shrinkage of the wood we've store it for an additional four years before commencing the work on it. How is the instrument set up? We've meticulously set it up with the following; i) A grade one fingerboard from India. Is there anything else that you can tell me about the instrument? Hand made with absolutely stunning looks and an awesome quality of sound - all for much less than the cost of a new instrument from a modern maker. What else can I say except that each time you play this instrument it is sure to bring a huge smile to your face for this is a real wow of an instrument.
