Lightweight Leather Bow quiver for a double bass bowContrabass Shoppe Lightweight Leather Bow Quiver:

I want a quality lightweight bow quiver.

For the weight conscious bass player The Contrabass Shoppe has designed and manufactured this superb quality leather bow quiver that weighs in - complete with straps and buckles - at an average of only 128gms. I'll repeat that - a full spec quiver that weighs in - complete with straps and buckles - at an average of only 128gms. To be precise that's 340gms less than other quivers that are available on the market. We boffins at The Contrabass Shoppe are pretty pleased with that statistic - because we all know too well - as you do - that the double bass isn't exactly the lightest instrument in the orchestra to play.

I want a quiver with straps and buckles / I want a quiver with laces.

At the request of a great many players this quiver is fitted with leather straps and buckles to both the top and bottom of the quiver. If you do have a preference for the use of either one or both laces it is simply a matter of pulling the straps through the slots cut into the front face of the quiver and threading yourself some shoe or bootlaces as required.

What other advantages does The Contrabass Shoppe quiver offer?

Well - we went all the way over to South Africa to get this quiver made because good quality leather is in plentiful (if you get a chance to visit one of the many game reserves its well worth the trip) supply. In addition the time and care taken throughout the processing of the leather means that the leather is dyed all the way through - as apposed to the inferior surface dye that is used in the main to manufacture other quivers on the market. Oh, I nearly forgot - one other very good reason for the SA manufacture was the favourable currency exchange, which will of course be reflected in the price to you.

Fitting Tips:

You will have to experiment for a while until you find the most advantageous way of attaching your quiver. Hear are a few tips:

  1. Place one or two small lumps of foam rubber inside the quiver so as to make a comfortable "bed" or "landing-site" for the tip of your bow. The foam will also help keep the mouth of the quiver open.
  2. Slot the very tip of the quiver behind the bottom of the tailpiece and the lower table. The leather is nice and soft so it won't damage the varnish on your instrument at all.
  3. Wrap the bottom strap at least twice around the lower tailpiece or if you prefer around the tailwire and fasten with the buckle.
  4. Get the quiver to the angle that you find most comfortable before wrapping the upper strap around the E and A string or if you prefer through the lower part of the string slots in the tail piece. That's it - you're all ready to rock and roll.

Stats:

Maximum length of quiver: 35.0cm
Length of top strap including buckle: 32.0cm
Length of bottom strap including buckle: 32.0cm
Average weight: 128gms

Why should I want more rigidity?

We stock a top quality leather bow quiver that positions to the bass side of the tailpiece. It is attached by means of a strong lace at the top and by a leather strap with buckle at the bottom. Hand made in England from the finest quality leather this particular design with its extra strip of leather that runs along its spine (creates more rigidity) is one favoured almost universally by both orchestral and jazz players alike. I've been told it is all to do with "the openness of the mouth". Hmm...

Hands Free!

When required your bow can quickly be inserted or withdrawn and once you fit one, you'll wonder how you ever managed to survive before without it. All of a sudden pizzicato passages become a breeze and the marking of bowings and dynamics etc. in ones part becomes infinitely easier. Those few bars rest become much more pleasurable because you can now lean fully over the bass with both hands free and when it comes to the most important job of all - running for the teas and coffee in the break for the rest of the section - you'll be happy in the knowledge that your bow is in a very safe place.

Summary:

Beautifully made in top-quality leather this piece of kit is an absolute must for every bass player.

Stats:

Maximum length of quiver: 46.5cm
Length of bottom strap including buckle: 34.0cm
Weight: 468gms average.
Colours available: Black or Brown.

Fitting Tips:

1) The very tip of the quiver should "slot-in" just behind the bottom of the tailpiece and the lower table. Squeeze and mould the leather slightly before positioning so as to make it flexible enough to adapt to the contour of the lower table.
2) Wrap the bottom strap at least twice around the lower tailpiece.
3) Get the quiver to the angle that you find most comfortable before tying the upper laces.
4) Put one or two small lumps of foam rubber inside the quiver so as to make a comfortable "bed" or "landing-site" for the tip of your bow.
